It’s always at moments like this when I think back to when I started shooting live music over five years ago. I’m shooting for XFM on stage at Brixton Academy, with full access to the entire venue and I pause for a moment to truly appreciate how things have changed for me. It’s always a real privilege to do something like this.
The funny thing is that I’ve never actually shot from the pit in Brixton Academy; of the seven or eight times I’ve visited this venue, it has always been with a AAA pass. For every advantage this offers, it also presents a problem. It’s great to have a different perspective and show an angle the crowd never gets to see, but I’m also a big fan of capturing expression through the eyes, which is much harder to achieve on stage.
Throughout the entire show, I was either shooting or editing on the stage. My editor was upstairs and needed images as quickly as possible for publication online. Between acts I was quickly going through the process of download, select, edit, re-save and re-naming before transferring. Exhausting but a great time!
